Hi, I’m Sophie Tonge, a second-year Interior Design student at the University of Huddersfield with a passion for creating spaces that are both functional and inspiring. I thrive on blending creativity with precision, ensuring each design balances aesthetic appeal with practicality.

My journey into interior design is unique, I spent over 11 years in dentistry as a dental nurse and receptionist, gaining invaluable skills in organisation, time management, and problem-solving in high-pressure environments. However, my true passion lay in design, and I made the life-changing decision to follow my dream. This career shift was not only for myself but also to set an example for my children—that it’s never too late to pursue what truly excites you.

Beyond academics, I take a hands-on approach to learning, engaging in personal renovation projects and collaborative design assignments to expand my skills and perspective. I’m particularly drawn to spatial design and layout planning, where I can combine my technical expertise with a keen eye for detail. Skilled in industry-standard design programs, I approach every project with a balance of creativity, organisation, and adaptability.

Through my experiences, I’m building a strong foundation for a meaningful career in commercial design. I’m excited to transform ideas into thoughtful, impactful spaces that inspire and connect.

EARLY INSPIRATION

My passion for interior design started long before I even knew what it was. As a child, I loved to play house and trips to IKEA were a huge source of excitement. I loved wandering through the showrooms, imagining how I could recreate different styles and layouts in my own bedroom. It was here that my creativity first sparked, experimenting with colours, furniture arrangements, and decor.

Another huge influence on my love for interiors came from the game 'The Sims'. I spent countless hours carefully designing homes, experimenting with layouts, and perfecting every little detail. What started as a fun game turned into a way to develop my eye for design, space planning, and creativity. Without realising it, 'The Sims' prepared me for the more advanced digital tools I use today, such as SketchUp, where I bring my design concepts to life in a more professional way.

At 21, I bought my first home, which deepened my passion for transforming spaces. Since then, I’ve dreamed of completing a self-build project, a goal that continues to fuel my love for interior design and architecture.
